Your Path to a Rewarding Career in Health Care

Are you a high school student interested in a career in health care? The Medical Explorers (MedEx) program is your chance to get an inside look at the world of health care and gain hands-on experience while still in school.

What is MedEx?

MedEx is a two-year program that gives you the opportunity to work with professionals across Marshall Health Network to explore various health care careers through this one-of-a-kind high school internship.

Program Details

  • Start Date: The program begins at the start of each school year.
  • Eligibility: This is open to students at Cabell Midland High School and Wayne High School who are entering their junior or senior year.
  • Locations: Split your time between classroom learning at your school and hands-on experience at local hospitals.
  • Mentorship: Learn from and work with experienced Marshall Health professionals.
  • Signing Ceremony: We’ll celebrate you and your commitment to the MedEx program in front of your family and friends. You’ll also receive a certificate and a MedEx badge to show off your achievement.

Career Path Options: 

Patient Care Technician (PCT):

  • Work in a supporting role to nursing staff by conducting patient care activities.
  • Provide direct and indirect non-professional nursing care under nursing or medical supervision.
  • Duties include cleaning, taking vital signs, performing phlebotomy procedures, performing EKG’s, obtaining lab specimens, charting, escorting patients, assisting with activities of daily living, managing clerical duties and ordering and receiving supplies.

Medical Assistant (MA):

  • Responsible for the daily planning, coordination and monitoring of care with the other health care professionals.
  • Duties include preparing charts, triaging patients, obtaining pre-certifications, facilitating patient referrals, coordinating patient and family education, assisting with office duties, performing tests such as EKGs or injections, performing phlebotomy procedures, taking vital signs and assisting with activities of daily living.
